What is Jersey?

It is a knitted and not woven fabric as is the chain and frame.

In fact, Jersey is part of the family of meshes!

For novice seamstresses, understanding the different varieties of Jersey may seem confusing.

You can easily get lost.

But don't panic, we explain everything to you so that you can familiarize yourself with this material and dare to integrate it into your next creations.

Jersey is therefore a type of knitted fabric, generally made from fibers of Baumwolle, wool, polyester or viscose.

It is characterized by its extensibility, lightness and soft texture.

The knitting of the jersey gives it great elasticity, which makes it comfortable to wear and easy to sew.

The material being knitted, the jersey is naturally expandable.

But an addition of elastane in the composition of the jerseys makes them more elastic and more comfortable.

Different types of jersey to know:

1. Jersey of Baumwolle:

The elasticity rate of a fabric measures its ability to stretch and regain its initial shape when the strength that stretches it is released.

It is a measure of the deformation of the fabric under the effect of a constraint and its ability to return to its original shape.

The elastane level represents the percentage of elastane in the composition of the fabric. It is not equal to the elasticity rate of the fabric.

 

Our 5 tips for sewing the jersey without overwhelming!

1- Choose the right type of needle and wire 

When you sew jersey, it is crucial to use the good supplies.

Opt for a jersey needle or a stretch tissue needle, which has a rounded tip to slide between the wires without tearing them.

 Also use an extensible polyester wire or a wire nylon Special for jersey.

 These wire choices will allow you to sew without problem and get flexible seams that adapt to the fabric.

2- Prepare and stabilize the fabric

Jersey tends to stretch during sewing, which can make it difficult to maintain parts together.

The fabric should be flat when cutting it to prevent the parts from being deformed.

 Never let jersey exceed or overflow from the table because the weight of the fabric will cause a deformation of the material and your parts thus cut will not be correct.

 

3 - Use a point appropriate to the sewing machine

 The overweight is the ideal tool for sewing the jersey, because it allows the edges to be overcomed at the same time as it sews the seams.

 However, if you do not have overwhelming, you can use a regular sewing machine using an extensible point or a zigzag point.

 These points allow the fabric to stretch without breaking the seams.

Be sure to test different point settings on a fabric sample to find the one that best suits your project.

 

4 - Spin and use sewing weights 

The jersey is a slippery fabric, which can make it difficult to align the parts during the seam.

To prevent the layers of fabric from moving, use fine pins and pin near the edges rather than directly on the sewing line.

Another tip is to use sewing weights to keep the parts in place without damaging them.

You can use sewing pliers or even heavy and flat objects such as improvised weights.

 

5 - Make neat finishes and hems with jersey

The finishes and the hems are key elements to obtain a clean result!

When sewing seams, remember to overwhelm the edges with a overwhelmer or use a zigzag point to prevent them from fraying.

For hems, you can opt for a rolled hem, a double needle hem or a hem.
