Bachette fabric and canvas Baumwolle
Do you have a sewing project for furnishings or decoration? Or are you looking to sew accessories?
Are you familiar with cotton bachette?
What is bachette?
The "bachette" fabric is a thick cotton canvas.
It is quite rigid and thick, more robust than cretonnes, for example. Cotton bachette is a fabric that holds its shape well and is durable. Bachette is a cotton canvas fabric, often used for making household linens such as sheets, tablecloths, curtains, or tea towels. It's a fairly thick and sturdy fabric, which can be plain or printed with various patterns.
It will be the support for durable sewing projects!
We also talk about cotton canvas, but this type of material also exists in other compositions, such as polyester or mixed compositions that are not necessarily 100% cotton.
Whether it's a patterned or plain cotton bachette, you will have multiple sewing project possibilities with it!
What to sew with bachette fabric?
As these cotton fabrics hold their shape and are thick, they are particularly suitable for sewing projects that require sturdiness.
Thick cotton canvas for furnishings
You can also sew furnishing projects, decorative seams, or accessories for the house:
- Patterns for cushions and patchwork projects
- Sewing machine covers
- Quilting projects, such as potholders or kitchen textiles
- You can cover poufs, armchairs, sofas
- Thick cotton canvas is perfect for kitchen and bathroom linens, thanks to its good water absorption capacity.
- There are also coated bachettes that can be used to sew outdoor tablecloths or outdoor furniture.
Thick cotton canvas for clothing
This is especially the case for sewing patterns for accessories: cotton canvas is perfect for sewing tote bags, sports bags, travel bags, handbags, pouches, vanities, fanny packs, school satchels, backpacks, hiking bags, and many other projects...
Some also use cotton canvas to sew some clothing projects that require strength and hold. This may be the case for some jackets or trousers.
How to sew bachette?
They hold their shape and are therefore very easy to cut in the first place and to handle in front of the sewing machine in the second place. It is also a fabric that irons very well (except if it is coated, of course), which is ideal for opening or flattening your seams correctly.
To learn to stitch straight and accurately or to learn to handle your overlocker, bachette will be a perfect ally. If you are new to sewing, we invite you to read this article dedicated to it: What fabrics to choose when you start sewing?
As with most fabrics, we advise you to wash and iron your bachette coupon before starting your sewing project.
Many materials shrink slightly at the first wash. Therefore, if you sew your project before washing it, it may shrink at the first wash.
So, it's better to wash it before you start.
To sew your bachette, you can use a standard needle, but if your project requires several layers of fabric, as is often the case for making fabric handbags (with thermobonded faces), do not hesitate to use thicker needles if necessary.
As always, make samples on your fabric scraps to prepare the right setting on the sewing machine and make stitches that you will like!
